ZAMANA GALLERY
–some “Z A M A N A” memories

-ameer janmohamed-

The Ismaili Centre at 1, Cromwell Gardens, London SW7 was formally opened by the Prime Minister Mrs Thatcher in 1985. What might be forgotten in the mist of times is that the Centre also became the home for THE ZAMANA GALLERY from 1985 to 1991. The Gallery occupied part of the ground floor and lower floor and had its own dedicated entrance on Cromwell Road, more or less directly opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum. In compliance with Kensington Council by-laws, it had a discreet sign over its entrance. The Zamana Gallery was open to the general public. The ZAMANA GALLERY was an exciting venture, the first one of its kind and provided a template for the future. More and more Islamic Galleries and Museums are now blossoming throughout the world. Awaited now is the opening of the latest purpose built Aga Khan Museum in Toronto later in 2013.

Hereunder are some personal recollections, photos, art work, newspaper clips relating to the ZAMANA GALLERY in London 1985/1991.
